info for Montenegro trip July 21-Aug 4
Our Summer missions trip is almost here! In about a month we will be on the way to Camp Monty in Niksic, Montenegro. In order to allow you to begin preparing for our trip, I am going to outline a brief itinerary for our trip. Over the next month both Jimmy and I will be sending you more information.
Thursday, July 8, Leave Newark at 4:40pm on a flight to Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Friday, July 9 to Monday , July 12 - After arriving into Dubrovnik early in the morning, After making the short trip from Dubrovnik to Niksic we will then begin our 3-day "Boot Camp." These three day are designed for us to prepare ourselves for ministry in Niksic. We will be practicing music, drama, and taking personal evangelism classes.
Tuesday, July 14 to Saturday, July 17 - We will be ready to begin Camp Monty. The first few days will be spent visiting different parts of the city and letting the city's youth know about the camp. As the week goes on we will be interacting with the kids while teaching soccer, basketball, tennis, Arts and Crafts and English lessons. Each night we will hold a camp wide meeting where we will have music, drama and a presentation of the gospel.
July 30, Head home!
Here are some questions that came in from parents and we thought we would send them to everyone if it might help in answering some of your questions.
We are going to send out info but I wanted to give you a head start. Hope all is well.
What are the temperatures at night, in the day? #The last couple of summers it's been rather warm night and day. Like New York in August.
What clothes do we need: shorts, pants, light coat, warm coat... # basic summer camp wear. No warm jacket, one pair of pants at least and athletic and casual clothing.
What are the accommodations? Do they have showers? Do we need to bring a
sleeping bag, mat, pillow, some kind of bedding? # We will be staying in an older hotel, basically camp situations. Bedding is provided. It might be best to pack everything in a backpack or a rugged roller bag.
How much money will we need? # money for snacks and additional food, meals are NOT buffet style, and depending on how much food you need you might want to supplement.
Will we need to buy snacks, meals, food, drinks? # depends on what you need to survive.
Should we bring food on the trip, snacks, meals.? # yes, bring snacks but we will need to be mobile because we are traveling by ferry and may have to pack our stuff a mile or 2.
Is there any special equipment we should bring? #We will let the everyone know of the needs for camp. They should have wifi in the hotel for computer use.
What besides the usual clothes and toiletries? # nothing special, but you might have to do clothes management. Washing materials.
What should we avoid eating or drinking while there? # we will advise everyone, but you should be fine with everything.
What should we not do while there.high fives, turning your back on someone.
what is culturally acceptable and not? (behavioral and verbal). # we will go over protocol at boot camp in Dubrovnik .
From Mom:
Does he need a physical form from the doctor, shots record or shots that he
needs to have before coming? #No, but bring any meds that you might need.
Will you be sending a list of things required for the trip? # yes
Does he need to bring enough clothes to last the entire trip or will there
be an opportunity to wash out clothes? # answered above
Will he need a swim suit, hiking boots, sandals, sneakers.? # yes on all, boots are not nessacary, sneaker will suffice as good walking shoes.
Should he bring sunscreen, bug spray, bandages, antibiotic cream.? # yes
How many suitcases is he allowed? Carry-ons? #One checked bag, and a carry on.
Does he need a letter of permission from us? He is seventeen. # yes, we will send that to you just to give us decision making powers if we can't reach you in the case of an emergency.
Does he need a visa and if so I assume that you will let us know what is
required? # no. Just a valid passport.
Here are some answers to questions that I thought I would share with everyone.
How much money should I bring and what type of money (cash, travelers checks, etc.) should I bring?
You technically do not need any money for food. We will provide 3 hearty meals per day both in Dubrovnik and in Niksic. Most of the meals however are only served with water to drink and you might want to purchase a soda (around $2) to go with your meals. We also sometimes join with other mission team members to go out for pizza and/or coffee and desert after the evening meetings. These food expenses would be extra and would cost roughly the same amount that they do here in the states. Finally, Dubrovnik is a high traffic tourist destination and there will be many opportunities to buy souvenirs there for those who wish to do so.
As for what type of money of money you should bring, here are my recommendations. The best way to get money overseas is with an ATM card. ATM machines are prevalent in Europe and they generally provide a decent exchange rate. If you do not have or want to carry an ATM card, I suggest bringing cash (American Dollars). There are many places that take American dollars and also many places that will exchange American Dollars. I will be happy to help you find the best place to change your cash. I will also be holding the money for the trip expenses and I will be available to hold your money if you do not feel comfortable carrying it on you. As a point of information, Italy and Montenegro are on the Euro while Croatia uses Kuna as their currency.
In speaking with the camp director yesterday, he asked me to pass along these requests. We would like each team member to bring a large bag of candy (no chocolate or anything that would melt) to give out as prizes in the English and Arts and Crafts classes. He also wanted me to pass along a wish list of sports prizes. These items are:
Basketballs
Soccer Balls
Basketball Cards
NBA related products (hats, jerseys, t-shirts, wristbands)
Soccer or Basketball related clothing
We will be purchasing and bringing some of these items as part of the cost of your missions trip, but if any of you would be able to bring more, please let me know.
